Questions before you start
Can my bathroom become a wet room?
Many bathrooms can be converted into wet rooms, but suitability depends on the floor construction, drainage and available floor height. A level-access wet room uses a waterproofed floor with a fall towards the drain. In some flats, waste pipes sit above floor level and cannot be lowered. A waterproofed room with a raised shower tray may then be a practical alternative, although it will have a step into the shower. I assess the space before recommending a solution.
How do you reduce the risk of a wet room leaking?
Reliable waterproofing starts with suitable preparation, a stable base and careful installation. I use reliable membrane and tanking systems, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and pay close attention to joints, corners and drain connections. I also carry out a 24-hour flood test where appropriate before tiling, once the system has cured. A successful test checks for leaks at that stage; later structural movement, damage or plumbing faults can still cause problems.
What is a flood test?
A flood test checks the waterproofing before tiles are installed. Once the system has cured in line with the manufacturer’s instructions, I temporarily seal the drain and contain the test area, fill it to the specified level, mark the water level and leave it for 24 hours. I then check for water loss and visible leaks, taking possible evaporation into account. Any concerns need to be investigated and resolved before tiling proceeds.
Marble, ceramic or porcelain tiles: which should I choose?
Porcelain is often my first choice for its durability and practicality, but I work with ceramic tiles, marble and other natural stone too. The right choice depends on where the tiles will be used, the finish you want and the care they need. For floors, we also consider grip and suitability for the room. Good results depend on choosing a suitable material and installing it correctly.
How much will my project cost?
